Dat dragon.

I don’t really wanna keep going on this because I… don’t like working on it. The initial sketch was far too ambiguous (maybe except for the building); I watch a tonne of speedpaints on youtube and such and those guys work from super rough sketches, but I keep forgetting that they are (usually) professionals, while I literally started painting digitally in January. So. Yeah.

Anyway because this part of Improvement Hell has been holding me up for too long I’m still gonna count it.

12. Look out a window. Draw what you see. Bonus points for adding something interesting.

Waaay too tired to finish it now. Still counts for this though:

On another note, I just noticed that my monitors show greenish blues VERY differently. On my HDTV (which is the one I have SAI on), the background/sky/hill colour shows up correctly, i.e. as a turquoise-y blue. On my computer monitor however, it’s a lot more green and looks downright ugly along with the orange and yellow. Not sure which monitor is “wrong” so to speak, so I’ll have to look into that.

Ok, smoothed it out a bit more. Need to add detail and such, though.
In case I don’t get around to that, this counts for both today’s r/SketchDaily prompt and:
10. Draw a BG with 1pt Perspective. Negative points if it’s a railroad or an empty street.

9. Draw a landscape of a place you’ve never been or drawn.
So this is not very good obviously, but I’ve always sucked at landscapes, and it’s slightly better than whatever the hell I’ve done before. Maybe I’ll revisit it some day.

I also learnt some cool things from it, and it gave me an excuse to read up on colour theory again and actually practise with it. So yeah.

Also, now I’ve tried two different ways of starting a landscape: sketch/line drawing -> colour underneath -> merge and use as underpainting, and b&w lineless sketch -> colour overlay -> merge and use as underpainting.

For some reason I really dislike the idea of starting in b&w and then adding colours, but it seems to work better for composition (in terms of value, at least), and it was FAR easier to test/figure out a decent colour scheme than when I started in colour. So there’s that.

No bonus points for me! I was gonna use this as an exercise on using spot blacks (as I really wanna learn traditional inking; I have brush pens and everything), but ehhh. Eeeehhhh.

The objects are: my camera charger, my Japanese grammar reference book (which uses roumaji which annoys the hell out of me but it’s literally pocket-sized so), and one of my mala bracelets (which has the incorrect number of beads, but oh well).

I’m just gonna say I’m done because wow I just keep finding things I want to fix/add/etc and it’s driving me nuts. I already spent far too long on this. So, there it is I guess.

7. Pick the weirdest object in your house/room. Draw it. Shadows and Highlights.

Reference: http://lerablog.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/cool-headphones.jpg

This one had me stuck for the longest time, partially because I’m bad at shadows/highlights, and partially because my room has shitty lighting (thanks, Scandinavia) and I don’t really have any weird objects. So I got a stock photo of some weird headphones.

To be quite honest, I genuinely feel like skipping out on applying for art schools this year and spending the next year studying more art on my own/taking art classes maybe (if I can find any in my budget anyway) and learning a cool language or something. I looked at the portfolios of people who have been accepted at the Animation Workshop, and uh… Yeah, I can’t compete with that.

6. Let’s have some fun. Design a character from this character generator. (created by PreservedCucumbers)

Name: Taki (for now).

Gender: nope.

Age: 20s

Occupation:

Location: I’m just gonna plop them into a new world because it’d be fun to work on something like that again. World name is Runur (for now). This character is from the Kingdom of Chollo I guess. Yeah I’ll work on that later.

Super generic furry but eh. The prompt asked for a human with animal features. It did give me some ideas for a race I can put into Runur though.

The thing at the bottom is a second idea I had, which is like a dragon human I guess. Still wanna do something about that.

5. Draw more figures. Quick gestures and silhouettes. x20, with atleast 10 different body shapes

First 5 were done using refs (among which were pictures of/from The Biggest Loser, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Oprah Winfrey). 6 was done with no ref, using this tutorial: http://plussizesaavy.tumblr.com/post/73021713921/how-to-draw-a-curvy-woman

The final 14 are 2-minute gesture drawings using pixelovely.

4. Draw a part of the human anatomy you have trouble with. x20, with atleast 5 being skeletal/musculature studies.

I picked the neck, because it’s something I’ve noticed I’ve had lots of trouble with lately. Whenever I do this again, which I will because this was really fun, I’m definitely gonna do legs though. Or noses or eyes. That would be a great idea actually.

Also at one point it kinda evolved into “hey let’s draw famous people.” So yeah. In order, the guys with faces are: Dara O'Briain, Lee Mack, David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr (who looks more like a character nicked out of The Godfather than anything else) and Nicki Minaj (which is the point at which my hand gave up I think). And all of them look dead inside because hey who can’t draw emotions? This guy right here. I loved drawing them though, I really need to draw more specific people, because it’s fun as hell, and I’m at a point where I’m not cringing and scrolling past after having drawn them. Also my friend recognised Lee and David, so that’s awesome.

17-20 were done without references.
